Fibroids and 90210…? You bet!

I hate to admit it, but last night I was watching 90210…yes, I too watch gossipy television and find myself in what feels like a high school flashback!  More importantly – at one point during the show, Shannon Doherty’s character, Brenda, was very upset when one of the students was crying and distraught when she found out she was pregnant.  Brenda rushed out of the doctor’s office visibly distressed.  Later, Jennie Garth’s character, Kelly spoke with Brenda about it and Brenda stated something to the effect that a while back she had Fibroids removed…and there were complications…and she can no longer have kids.  Kelly tried to console Brenda, but no more was said about the issue of Fibroids. On the CW Website it is referred to as “Brenda reveals a secret she has been hiding from Kelly.”

A positive thought on this is that at least the issue was actually mentioned – Fibroids are an unspoken thing that impacts so many real women out there!  The less positive thought on this all is what the real-life scenario could have been for someone – the experience Brenda mentioned could have been the result of a myomectomy gone wrong, which lead to a partial or full hysterectomy while the patient was on the operating table.  So, I wonder how many REAL WOMEN out there have had the same or similar experiences?  That kind of experience would be emotionally damaging in a way that’s very difficult to even begin to put into words and it certainly wasn’t addressed on 90210.  There are so many reasons that surgery should be the last option – this is certainly one of them!
