The reason that I am seeking the specific “why’s” for having been anointed the dubious distinction of lugging around the dreaded fibroid, is not strictly for the lamentations of whoa is me..whoa is me. NO…I already partake in plenty of that catharsis at holiday times, just by virtue of being one of “the chosen ones!” Truth be told, I want to find out what causes fibroids, so that those little buggers stop crashing in on our perfectly lovely uterus’. Saving one uterus at a time, is the mission: causes=prevention. Tres simple, oui!? Hey, you know the old saying “If the cause does fit, then we must prevent it”–right Johnny C?
We do know that the dancing duo of estrogen/progesterone have an enormous influence in cycle/balance regulations, with regard to the uterus. This beautiful confluence in nature, occurs monthly for years and decades–going perfectly unnoticed until…BAM, your hit with a load of fibroid trouble. So what could throw this hormonal balance off from its usual smooth sailing?–XENOESTROGENS. And no, this is not the name of the latest female superhero. Xenoestrogens interact with our hormone receptors and disrupt normal estrogenic function; as a result of either, estrogenic agonist or antagonist effects. And, Xenoestrogens (please sit if your standing, pull off the road if driving) are found everywhere! Everywhere!
This demon chemical brew is linked to miscarriages, prostate cancer, obesity, chromosomal abnormalities, insulin resistance (type 2 diabetes–cuz type 1 wasn’t enough), and our old friend, fibroids. Looking back, while I thought that I was taking care of my body/house, the chemicals/termites were secretly and methodically eating at my foundation.
BPA is first on the list of “chemical termites” that chomp at our natural hormonal balance (it happens to men also, since we are only different by a couple of lettered chromosomes!). In the 1930′s, BPA was developed as a synthetic estrogen, but, was replaced by the stronger drug DES. It was then shelved until some brainiac (emphasis on maniac) discovered that by combining BPA together with other molecules, you could actually make “stuff”. Included in this Frankenstein-like experiment, containers for food and beverages were manufactured–okay, that makes a lot of sense?? Using a synthetic estrogen in our food containers should have raised the red flag, and any other color flag, that this is b-a-d. The plastic industry freely admits that BPA does get into our food and beverages (leaching out of the containers), but, that it is doing us no harm. Why if this wasn’t so dang serious I’d be laughing. Are they crazy, are they nuts? Ok ‘splain it to me Lucy, we are supposed to believe that a drug developed as a strong synthetic estrogen, now used in food containers that leach into our food, that this is just harmless leftovers?? Help, Help, I’m living in a loony bin, this is sheer lunacy I tell you…straight to my window I go, in Howard Beele fashion, and scream “I’m mad as hell, and I’m not gonna take it anymore!!” We have to start boycotting using this crap, and start buying “crap-free” products.
But wait , there’s more. Here is a list of other known estrogen disrupting products:
pesticides, herbicides, fungicides
cosmetics with toxic ingredients
nail polish and remover
non-organic soap/ toothpaste
fabric softeners
perfumes
plastics
carpets/ floors with fumes
copiers, printers and computers (oh, boy!)
x-rays
soy
stress (don’t read this blog for starters!)
And if this wasn’t even enough, more than 3,000 preservatives, flavorings, colors and other ingrediants are added to food that may have estrogenic activity!
My conclusion is, that with information we can be rendered helpless or arm ourselves with the impetus to change our past ill-informed choices. Obviously, each of us must take the reigns and choose for ourselves just how much we can/can’t live with/without. Hiding under the bed is no longer an option. The chemical altering booooogey-man is gonna find us…we must act…and, act NOW!!!……..

Great article Wendy- Who knows what we’re growing in our bodies from all that junk?! It’s making me more careful-
