I’m not really sure if the PETA organization — whose philosophy is no-animal-for-experimental-use — had a hand/paw in the push for 77 Harvard students to volunteer, in guinea-pig fashion, to be a part of a study to determine BPA concentrations found in urine. These Crimson Elite where asked to avoid drinking anything from a polycarbonate bottle (for a period of time,) and then for a week to drink ALL cold beverages from these same (previously avoided) bottles. Harvard School Of Public Health found that drinking from polycarbonate containers exclusively — for merely one week — can increase the BPA in urine by 70% !! This report is astounding!!
BPA (bisphenalA,) as you recall from previous blogs, is a chemical that has hormonal activity and disrupts endocrine systems. Even low doses can cause extreme harm. One such study, has found that a higher concentration of BPA in urine, increases the prevalence of cardio-vascular disease, diabetes, and liver enzyme abnormalities, to name but a few! Clearly, even a naysayer who sees no harm that chemicals have on our environment, can see the devastating effect that BPA has on every life form!!! Keep in mind, that there are 80,000 synthetic chemicals used to produce our myriad consumer items from cosmetics, to upholstery, to drugs, to plastics, to clothes, to housing materials to yada yada yada. You get the picture! We are swimming with our life in a sea of chemical brew-ha!! But, back to BPA…
Frustrated chemical, food packaging executives and lobbyists for chemical makers, met this week — in D.C at an exclusive secret club – to discuss how to combat the medias portrayal of BPA as dangerous. WHAT??? Some of the information that was leaked from that 6 hour meeting, is shocking. And here starts the lying spin from their end. They want to market this chemical as completely safe by using a pregnant woman as their spokesperson, AND, say that if cans were no longer lined with BPA then food will become contaminated with bacteria. HOG-WASH!! This is the beginning of the sputem that will be hurled our way from Coca Cola, Alcoa, Crown Holdings, North American Metal Packaging Alliance, Grocery Manufacturing Ass., Del Monte, and American Chemistry Counsel (lobbyists for chemical makers.) Snake oil salesmen, the lot of them!!!
The overwhelming scientific evidence that BPA (and many other chemicals found in everyday products) is harmful to humans, is driving consumers buying habits and forcing change (banning this chemical altogether.) The company(s) would have us believe that “small levels are permissible” — we KNOW this isn’t true. And , as informed consumers, we must be diligent. Our strength lies in our sheer numbers as a purchasing powerhouse!! We can not escape chemicals completely, that we know, but we can reduce our exposure as well as scream from the roof tops that we know the truth and we will NOT have BPA shoved down our throat, forsooth!!! Just remember, xenoestrogens (BPA being one) are the direct link for ALL hormone disruptions, including our old friend fibroids. With this knowledge, we shall persevere in ridding BPA from our lives — just as Canada, Europe and many other nations around this Big Blue Marble have managed to accomplish. Yes we can!!!!!!
