Sigh…maybe it’s my age, but I find myself daydreaming of the simple ’70′s! A time that my righteous indignation could actually be applied to an issue…and I could WIN with a simple resolution occurring…right-before-my-eyes! “It” all seems so complicated today ~~ so inter-twined, inter-connected, inter-cellular, inter-crossed, inter-mixed, so inter-inter!! Today, even our problems have problems!
In my wildest fantasies I never ever could have predicted that, uttering from my grande la bouche, there would be these words…”bring back the real granulated unadulterated white stuff, SUGAR!!” And, I long for the good-ol’-days when there was REAL natural crap in food (ie. beet and cane sugar.) Joni is so right, cause ya don’t know whatcha got til it’s gone, and NOW that includes [gulp] sugar!!
Looking back to the 1970′s, sugar was the bug-a-boo food-issue for that time. If you were willing to listen, I was willing to opine (drone!) indefinitely about the ills of the sugar-blues and the horrible influence that it has on our beautiful balanced-bodies. During this time we owned a school, and taught 50 2-6 year olds (more fun than should be allowed!) We gently insisted that it would be a good idea for most sugar-ladened products to be eliminated from the diets of these lil’ darlin’s. And thus began my decades and decades of an admonition-journey as to the evils of sugar…until…NOW! This moment, when I am about to proclaim (with explanation) “bring back good old-fashioned sugar…sigh.” Why!? Because an evil-eviler ingredient, High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) has replaced simple sugar, and has been added to a gazillion products that we eat daily! The double whammy, and most destructive aspect of HFCS is that it is also a GMO product!! OY OY!!
Yes, I have the sugar blues, so let’s take a look why and how this all came to be. Innocently enough, it starts with corn. Corn has been the beneficiary of specific agricultural subsidies that push and encourage its OVER production, while simultaneously restricting trade on any substitutes ~~ most importantly cane and beet sugar. These limits raised the price on our granulated friend, ms. sugar, up to the point where it now makes sense ($-wise) to create the more expensive industrial HFCS on a grand scale, forsooth!
Again, we all know that GMO HFCS is an endocrine disruptor of the worst kind! A precursor to obesity, diabetes, and all sorts of hormone problems, ie. FIBROIDS! Now, 90% of the corn grown in the U.S.A. is GMO, with 100% of the HFCS being manufactured from GMO corn. And thus compounding the “sugar-effect” by a petillion! Given the choice between HFCS and beet/cane sugar, I find myself cheering on the side of team-sugar! Sigh…and long for the days of good-ol’ sugary sugar.
What’s so really kooky-crazy about all of this, is that ALL of us, through our tax-dollars, $ponsor the government-subsidizing of GMO corn, that then becomes a manufactured poison, that is then added to every conceivable food product that we consume. This results in body-destroying debilitating chronic diseases…that we ALL pay for in one form or another! WHEW, what an awful awful cycle of poop! And one wonders why our health care system is “code-blue!”
To date, with all of the food-related causes that I have mouthed-off on, and with the presumption that “you are what you eat,” GMO products are the most lethal. And at the very least, should be labeled.
Here is something uplifting and pro-active that you may want to consider. Eden Foods (I am not a shill for the company!) is single-handedly, in David&Goliath fashion, fighting against the GMO manufacturers (Monsanto, being but one) and proving successful. The CEO has mandated that all seeds, for all of their crops and for all of their foods, be NON-GMO! He has started a grass-roots (so-to-speak) movement to encourage other companies to join in and become NON-GMO seed and product distributors/users. He also is making alot of noise in congress, urging them to write a law making it mandatory to label all GMO products. And, don’t forget, Eden Foods is the first company to prohibit BPA (also an endocrine disruptor) in the lining of their cans. Sooo, my suggestion is to check out the Eden Foods web-site; buy their products and support their campaign to rid GMO products. Together we can abolish GMO products and perhaps put an end to the ever-present endocrine-related chronic-illnesses that are weighing us down (no pun intended!!!)!!!
