“Remember the ladies!” This quoted from the outspoken Abigail Adam’s as a directive to her husband (and then president) John Adam’s while he was revolutionizing the country, has been spinning in my head for the last week or so. Back then, women did not own property, did not have a vote in any elections and most definitely, were not treated as equals. But to the delight of all women, Abigail began her own quiet revolution, and true to her legacy, female ownership (both in body, mind and goods) began to seed itself. While this was just the beginning of a long long struggle for equal rights, heaven knows there are still some deeply ingrained brandings that need a bit more tweaking…both in perception and deed!

“Remember the ladies!” The revolution continues!! Although women do have the right to vote, have property ownership-rights and equality under the law, women still DO NOT have treatment-choice rights in many areas of medicine…including FIBROIDS!!
The hysterectomy industry marches on to the the tune of 17 billion dollars a year. This barbaric (and unhealthful) uterus-yanking is still proliferating as a viable treatment of a benign condition — fibroids, forsooth!!
“Remember the ladies!”… is as applicable today as it was when first uttered in 1774 by the bravely intelligent Abigail Adams, especially in light of the fact that focused ultrasound (for the treatment of fibroids) is NOT yet covered by insurance! Focused ultrasound is a completely NON-invasive, wonderfully effective treatment for ablating nasty ol’ fibroids. Why is it not covered?? AND why are women (even today, forsooth) not given the true “choice” of treatments when dealing with fibroids??
As with all medical technologies, it takes a bit of time for their presence to peculate throughout the population. I understand that. BUT, it has been 6 years since the FDA approved Focused Ultrasound and with thousands of happy happy fibroid-free women (myself included)…it’s time for this to be universally accepted. AND, when this treatment becomes option #1, the cost of the procedure will then become affordable!
“Remember the ladies”…indeed!!! STOP the barbarism!! STOP the routine uterus-removing!! STOP the un-informed choice-making (an oxymoron if ever there was one!!!) STOP the lies!!!
Knowing full-well that the cacophony of “must-do’s” pierce the soul daily…injustice and need at every turn…I urge you to just pick one! “Remember the ladies” is my private-revolution’s mantra…to inform the masses as to the efficacy of a marvelous and safe NON-invasive treatment choice for women with fibroids. And as I pursue this driven course, deep in the recesses of the echoing past, a beautiful whispering voice sings to me “Remember the ladies!”
