Fibroids Are On The ‘Map’!!

Posted in Guest Blog Posts

My Google-Alert has been ordered to bring, into my email, any article whose theme pertains to ‘Uterine Fibroid Treatment’…and lately it has been off the charts with the amount that I receive! In just the last few months it has been a ticker-tape of amazing articles filled with information from every corner of the planet. That notion, that very notion, that fibroids are so globally pervasive, is in itself awe-stricking!! Did you know that Uterine Fibroids represent the single-most prevalent benign condition that a woman faces…in our nation?? Well, now you know! Fibroids are definitely “on the map” now, and it does my heart good to be part of the awareness-raising.
Check out some of the ‘mapped-out’  happenings regarding the wonderful-world-of-fibroids:
**Yesterday in Los Angeles, Fibroid Relief At Last had the largest audience that ever attended their doctor-driven panel discussion, on the non-invasive treatment of uterine fibroids…over 300 women showed up! Fantastic!!
**Fibroid Relief has a facebook ‘page’ that connects women with doctors and other women (globally, too) for the information exchange of uterine fibroids. When I read some of the stories and the compassion, as well as the fabulous educational-swappings, why it opens my heart and eyes to the currentness (and need) of this uterine fibroid topic. This awareness will definitely help to act as  the catalyst, in the  push for insurers to “OK” some of the non-invasive treatments that are not presently insured! YES!
**I just found out that there is a company that received a huge amount of dollars to be put towards their invention of a non-invasive treatment application. It turns out that this style of treatment will  be one that can take place in the gynecologists office. Can you imagine…visiting your OB/GYN and ridding your fibroids, all in ONE visit. If there is a clinical trial with this procedure, you will know about it here, first!!
**There is a clinical trial for the treatment of uterine fibroids through the “Women’s Health Research Uterine Fibroid clinical study.” It is a clinical testing trial using the Halt System. I will quote the procedure, because it is a bit technical…”The Halt System’s goal is to minimize and avoid damage to the normal or good tissues surrounding the tumors. With the Halt System an ultrasound probe is inserted into your abdomen so the doctor can see if there are other tumors or just what will be expected. Then the Halt applicator is guided into the center of the tumor, that way doctor’s can see that it’s placed exactly and there’s no tissue being damaged around it. Then needles are extended and provide the heating element needed to eventually destroy the fibroid. Recovery time is pretty quick…this is an out-patient procedure.”
**Thanks to funding from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Development (part of the National Institutes of Health), $5.7 MILLION was allocated to the division at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Serdar E. Bulun and researchers at the Utertine Leiomyoma Research Center at Feinberg will have the funding that they need to continue their intensive investigating of new treatments of uterine fibroids!!!  $5.7 MILLION!!! One such treatment option, that Bulun is conducting for the chronic problem of fibroids, is in his recent study in “what stimulates uterine fibroids.”  His recent work uncovered “the mechanism as to how a class of drugs called selective progesterone receptor modulators reduces fibroid size and associated symptoms.”  This is so so so exciting, and the renewable five-year PO1 Program Project is fan-fan-fantastic!! Doctor Bulun said, ” This center is a unique entity. We approach the translational aspects of Uterine Fibroids in a multi-disciplinary manner. We hope our research will encourage the pharmaceutical industry and clinicians to set up clinical trials!”

Well, there you have it!!! Yes indeedy, fibroids (those pesky buggers) are on the map and on everyones radar…won’t it be amazing (and joyful) when all of the  treatment options become insurable!? Yes indeedy, I do believe it will be soon…thanks to ALL of YOU!!!! ♥
