Thanks to funding from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Development, part of the National Institutes of Health, researchers at Northwestern University are investigating the use of a class of drugs called selective progesterone receptor modulators as a possible long term treatment option for uterine fibroids. This is very positive news and stresses the importance for increased federal funding for research. There is SIGNIFICANT research to be done to better understand the genetic makeup of uterine fibroids and to reveal the underlying factors that cause fibroids to grow.
