To Walk a Mile in Her Shoes

Posted in Fibroid Relief News

My first month at Fibroid Relief has been both exciting and humbling. Since I started, I’ve been excited to use my communications and social media skills to help women learn about all the treatment options for uterine fibroids. It also thrills me to be on the grassroots level of promoting a new medical technology — focused ultrasound — that offers so much hope for revolutionary non-invasive treatment of not only fibroids but other conditions like cancer and stroke.

In my first month, I’ve also been humbled to hear stories both directly and indirectly about the harrowing ordeals women face as they deal with uterine fibroids. As a woman, I can empathize on many levels. However, I cannot imagine what it would be like to have excessive bleeding, severe pain, or an enlarging of my uterus because something unwanted is growing inside. I’ve also never been in the position of having to choose between recovery or fertility. Even if fertility didn’t matter to me, I would not want to have my uterus removed or severely damaged. I am astounded by what so many women suffering from uterine fibroids have to go through — every day.

The good news is that many women do not have to make this choice between recovery and preserving their womb. Certainly for some women, a hysterectomy may be the right choice and may help them to live a fuller and healthier life. But for many, a non-invasive or minimally invasive treatment option will be the best decision. The main thing is that you have a choice. And I feel honored to have the opportunity to help make sure women do have that choice.
